Porcelain Veneers

What is Laminate Veneer?

Beautiful teeth are important for everyone regardless of age, occupation and gender. For the management of discoloration of teeth, cracked/broken teeth and discoloration secondary to filling, a cosmetic procedure is performed by just attaching porcelain onlay onto the front surface of teeth instead of cutting them completely. The laminate veneer is an excellent way to correct anterior teeth and provide teeth with an aesthetic appearance. It is the most protective prosthesis as teeth are cut down slightly with this method. Since the frame contains no metal and porcelain has its own structure, they are highly cosmetic restorations. You can have white teeth, fill the spaces between teeth and get a gorgeous smile with laminates.

Why Porcelain Veener?

The porcelain veneer is a great alternative to the crown. It is possible to change the tone, shape and size of the teeth with a more conservative approach. Porcelain laminates are successfully applied for tetracycline-induced discoloration, trauma, discoloration following canal treatment and congenital or acquired defects. Very successful outcomes are also obtained for patients with diastema, namely the gap between teeth.

How Is Porcelain Veneer Applied?

Patients need to attend at least 3 sessions for the construction of laminate veneers. A control impression is obtained in the first appointment and the evaluation is made. The tooth is cut and the impression is obtained in the second session. Finally, the bonding procedure is carried out.

The first session is strikingly important, as the treatment is planned. The design of the smile that the patient expects should be evaluated well, and the patient should be duly informed in advance about the conditions that pose risks for the teeth and the dental structure; treatment options should be determined. A dental impression is obtained. The teeth and the face are photographed. Patient’s expectation, lifestyle and needs are determined. An alternate model is created, if required, to evaluate the final status of the teeth.

Treatment Process of Porcelain Veneer?

The teeth are cut down in the second session that takes around 1.5 hours, although it may vary depending on the number of teeth. The tooth is abraded by approximately 0.5 mm under local anesthesia. A dental impression is obtained. The veneers are manufactured within 1 week, although this may vary depending on the number of teeth. The bonding procedure takes approximately 2 hours. Porcelain laminates are first placed onto the teeth and the tone, shade and shape are checked before bonding. The tone can be slightly modified with the adhesive. If all details are confirmed, the laminates are bonded to the teeth using a special adhesive.

What Are The Advantages of Laminate Veneer?

  • It is one of the most protective cosmetic dental procedures as only the anterior surface of the tooth is slightly abraded.
  • Gingival harmony and protection are very good compared to porcelain crowns. Oral hygiene is easier.
  • A model specific to you is created, allowing you to see the three-dimensional appearance in your mouth before your teeth are prepared.
  • Thanks to light transmittance, a natural tooth appearance is achieved.
  • Discoloration caused by coffee and smoking is minimal compared to natural teeth due to the porcelain surface.
  • The treatment period is short.
  • Wear resistance is very high.

What Are The Disadvantages of Laminate Veneer?

It requires precise laboratory and clinical work.

Hard foods should not be broken with the teeth. Although the bonding agent is strong and laminates are wear-resistant, hard foods should be avoided and laminates should be protected.

If you have teeth grinding or clenching (bruxism), you should inform your doctor.

Tooth sensitivity to cold and heat may occur immediately after bonding. This is expected and usually reversible.
